Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off <MTVNLINK type="url" id="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</MTVNLINK>'s 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again." That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on <a href="/news/articles/1610708/adam-allison-shine-on-idol-rock-night.jhtml">"American Idol" rock night</a> Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004. <div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"> <embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtvmusic.com:84215" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="dist=http://www.mtvmusic.com" allowFullScreen="true" AllowScriptAccess="always"></embed></div> The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon. For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997. Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction. Lady Gaga's Path To Album Of The Year Race

MTV News looks back on Mother Monster's huge year and her genre-busting, Grammy-nominated album.

Some artists, like <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/adele/artist.jhtml">Adele</a>, release albums that are pure <a href="/news/articles/1678825/grammy-2012-album-of-year-adele-profile.jhtml">Grammy catnip</a> thanks to instant-classic sounds that resonate with the Recording Academy's way-back contingent. Then there's Lady Gaga. <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:717202" width="240" height="211"></div> She's been a bridesmaid twice for Album of the Year at the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys">Grammys</a>, losing out on her first two releases. But with her third bid on Sunday, for <a href="/news/articles/1664105/lady-gaga-born-this-way-stream.jhtml">Born This Way,</a> Gaga appears to have made the kind of career-defining, big-idea album that Grammy voters could not deny. It had all the things the Academy loves in an Album of the Year nominee: ambition, deeply personal tracks that provide a glimpse at the artist's psyche, bold musical explorations, strong sales and chance to prove that they're hip enough to get what the kids are listening to. (Or, in some cases, a new album by Steely Dan.) And, indeed, BTW did have it all, from the jackhammer electronica of "Marry the Night" to the tango-lite grooves of "Americano," the techno attack of "Heavy Metal Lover," hints of biography in "Hair," the lighter-raising ballads in "Yoü and I" and "The Edge of Glory" and, of course, the title track, which served as both a dance-floor phenomenon and an <a href="/news/articles/1657772/lady-gaga-born-this-way.jhtml">empowerment anthem</a> for the ages. The album, one of the most anticipated of 2011, not only <a href="/news/articles/1664888/lady-gaga-billboard.jhtml">crashed the charts</a> with stellar sales figures of more than one million in its first week, but it also managed to once again bend the will of the music-buying public to meet her quirky, unpredictable muse. Gaga promised her fans that she was pouring everything she had into the disc and when it arrived, complete with a series of trippy, <a href="/news/articles/1663387/lady-gaga-judas-video.jhtml">provocative videos</a> that also pushed the envelope, they couldn't have asked for any more from their Mother Monster. Frequent musical collaborator producer Fernando Garibay said the recognition from the Recording Academy was a nice cherry-topper to a year of hard, hard work. "We worked on this album for so long and it was like our baby so it was more about if the fans would love it; that was the most important thing.," he told MTV News. "But of course, nominations, yeah, that's cool." <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:732837.id:1678680" width="240" height="211"></div> The first full-length effort from Gaga since her rise to international stardom, Born This Way allowed the singer to exorcise some demons, comment on her newfound fame and, of course, create the kind of over-the-top tracks that would lend themselves to equally eye-popping live performance. "This album was the most personal, the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion and emotion from her and the team," Garibay said. "We all followed her lead on this, on every song ... how intense every avenue of making this record was for us, protecting the record, creative, conceptually, every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme." The video for the title track took the Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. In a year in which she kept turning heads with ever-more-insane red carpet walks, Gaga fittingly raised the bar further at the show, where she performed and accepted the Female Video Moonman as her male <a href="/news/articles/1669863/lady-gaga-best-female-video-vmas.jhtml">alter ego, Jo Calderone</a>. In between those appearances, Gaga also managed to circle the globe with the Broadway-worthy <a href="/news/articles/1664768/lady-gaga-semi-precious-weapons-monster-ball.jhtml">Monster Ball Tour</a>, on which she brought the new songs to life every night in a spectacle that was the visual equal of her studio experiments. Though she worked with her core team, which includes Garibay, producer RedOne and DJ White Shadow, Gaga also opened the doors to collaborations with late Bruce Springsteen saxophonist Clarence Clemons and classic rock producer <a href="/news/articles/1669108/lady-gaga-you-and-i-music-video-premiere.jhtml">Robert "Mutt" Lange</a> and Queen guitarist Brian May, who helped give "Yoü and I" its epic, AM radio majesty. Gaga was so excited to record the album that she insisted on having a portable studio with her at all times to work on new music even as she toured the world for The Fame Monster, RedOne said. The road work paid off, as the album has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, spinning off a bevy of hits, including the title track, "Marry the Night," "Judas," "Yoü and I" and "The Edge of Glory." And though he's been there before, RedOne added that getting another nod for the biggest Grammy honor of all is new every time. "It's an amazing thing to be nominated for the biggest thing in music industry," he said. "It's always a big honor. I get happy and I never want to get used to it." Chaos! Profanity! Oscar 'In Memoriam' Omits Stars Of 'Grease,' 'Rambo'

Some people watch the Oscars to see the pretty dresses, look for potential nip slips, revel in the weepy acceptance speeches, root against the leading contenders and yes, a few even tuned in for host Billy Crystal's paint-by-numbers movie spoofs.

But then there are those of us who wait for the annual "In Memoriam" segment that pays tribute to those the movie world has last over the past year, eager to see who has been omitted. In the past two years, that list has included "Airplane!" star Peter Graves and "Lost Boys" actor Corey Haim. In 2010, some fans were outraged that former pin-up and "Charlie's Angels" star Farrah Fawcett (who appeared in films including "Logan's Run" and "Dr. T and the Women") was left out while singer Michael Jackson made the list.

You can't always include everyone, and while this year's list hit the high points with tributes to such greats as Elizabeth Taylor, Whitney Houston, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and director Sidney Lumet, it did, alas, miss a few bold-faced names.

Among the most notable was the classic character actor Charles Napier, who died in October at age 75. From the "Blues Brothers" to "Philadelphia," "Silence of the Lambs," "Rambo: First Blood II" and "The Cable Guy," Napier was the go-to guy for the craggy tough guy with a heart of gold, or steel.

Another star missing from the tribute was Bubba Smith. Though best-known earlier in life as an imposing defensive end who played in two Super Bowls during a nine-year NFL career, Smith reinvented himself in the late 1970s and 1980s as a comedic actor with roles in the six "Police Academy" films as Cadet Moses Hightower and in other comedies including "The Naked Truth" and "The Silence of the Hams." In addition, he posted a slew of TV appearances on series including "Good Times," "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" and "Family Matters."

His later years were marred by a deadly drug addiction, but actor Jeff Conaway earned his spot in Hollywood history by playing the swaggering Kenickie in the smash 1978 movie musical "Grease." He would never reach those heights again on the big screen, appearing in a string of B movies including "Almost Pregnant," "Alien Intruder," "Bikini Summer II" and "L.A. Goddess," but he made his mark again on TV as the lovable Bobby Wheeler in five seasons of the series "Taxi."

For lovers of the rebooted "Batman" big-screen franchise, the omission of character actor Michael Gough was a crime. The Englishman, who appeared in more than 150 movies, began his career in 1948 with a small role in "Anna Karenina" and worked consistently until his death last March at the age of 94, introducing himself to a new generation in 1989 in Tim Burton's "Batman" as unflappable butler Alfred Pennyworth. Gough would reprise the role three more times and end his career with a voice-over part in Burton's 2010 remake of "Alice in Wonderland."

In addition, after leaving her off last year following her death just weeks before the 83rd Oscars, the Academy once again passed over French actress Maria Schneider, who became famous for her career-making (and some say breaking) role as Marlon Brando's sexual obsession in 1972's "Last Tango in Paris." One bigger-than-life star the Academy also managed to miss was the buxom Z-movie superstar Tura Satana, who also passed away just weeks before last year's Oscars. The cult movie object of obsession appeared in Russ Meyer's classic 1965 jigglefest "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" as well as such other drive-in fare as "The Astro-Zombies," "The Doll Squad" and Rob Zombie's 2009 "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto."

Michael Jackson Doctor Can't Afford Lawyer For Appeal

Just weeks after being sent to jail for <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">four years</a> following a conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml" target="_blank">Michael Jackson</a>, cardiologist Conrad Murray is throwing himself on the mercy of the court. The doctor had been slated to earn up to $150,000 a month to act as Jackson's personal physician before the pop icon's death in June 2009 from an overdose of the Murray-administered surgical anesthetic propofol. News</a> reported that Murray filed a <a href="/news/articles/1675343/conrad-murray-conviction-appeal.jhtml">notice of appeal</a> in Los Angeles Superior Court in which he claimed that he is "indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal." Murray, 58, is planning to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, but has not yet filed papers with the California Appeals Court. He had hired two lawyers to handle his manslaughter case, but is now seeking attorneys with appeal experience. One of those former lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, told E! that he was shocked at how his client is being treated in jail. "It is crazy and unbelievable how [the sheriffs] are treating" Murray in jail, said Flanagan, who claimed he waited over an hour to see Murray, who was brought out in handcuffs and leg chains. Flanagan was further shocked to see Murray handcuffed to the table for their meeting, something the lawyer said he'd never seen before in the case of a low-level, non-violent offender. Charles Peckham, who is handling civil cases against Murray, told the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/doctor-convicted-in-michael-jacksons-death-seeking-court-paid-attorney-for-appeal/2011/12/13/gIQAHIYGsO_story.html" target="_blank">Associated Press</a> that his client is under tight security and isolation that is more intense than other inmates at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail. "Treating him like Hannibal Lecter is offensive," said Peckham. "This man who saved lives made a mistake, and they're going to [make] him pay like a mass-murderer." Sheriff's officials defended the tight security, saying it was for Murray's safety.

You kind of can't go wrong when the soundtrack you've put together for one of the most eagerly anticipated literary adaptations in years kicks off <a href="/music/artist/yeah_yeah_yeahs/artist.jhtml">Yeah Yeah Yeahs</a> singer Karen O's take on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a>'s "Immigrant Song." <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:693384" width="240" height="211"></div> Fans heard the throbbing industrial take on the rock classic cooked up by former Nine Inch Nails mastermind and O when a trailer for the David Fincher-directed "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" leaked back in May. And on Thursday, Oscar-winning industrial-rocker-turned-film composer Reznor and musical partner Atticus Ross unveiled the full track list for their "Tattoo" score album. The follow-up to their award-winning "The Social Network" score was a labor of love, according to a <a href="http://nin.com/?id=102677" target="_blank">post</a> Reznor put up on the NIN site on Thursday announcing the disc. "For the last fourteen months Atticus and I have been hard at work on David Fincher's 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,' " he wrote about the American version of the tale of pierced and punished hacker <a href="/news/articles/1655879/rooney-mara-dragon-tattoo.jhtml">Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara)</a> and her muckraking journalist compatriot <a href="/news/articles/1667542/daniel-craig-rooney-mara-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo.jhtml">Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig)</a>. "We laughed, we cried, we lost our minds and in the process made some of the most beautiful and disturbing music of our careers. The result is a sprawling three-hour opus." "Glee" paid tribute to Michael Jackson during Tuesday night's episode and, shockingly, kept the story moving along in the midst of several MJ-inspired musical numbers. Kurt, Rachel and Quinn all received great news about college, Rachel finally accepted Finn's proposal and evil Sebastian's plot to harm Kurt with a doctored slushee backfired when Blaine took the hit for his boyfriend. <div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:730282.id:1671179" width="240" height="211"></div> Yet the forced "all Michael, all the time" song selection led to some head-scratching scenes including Kurt, Rachel and Finn serenading an injured Blaine with Jackson's love song to a rat, "Ben," and two different music-video re-enactments only appealed to Jackson superfans. Nickelodeon announced its nominations for the 25th annual <a href="http://www.nick.com/kids-choice-awards/" target="_blank">Kids' Choice Awards</a> on Thursday (February 16), and the list is as diverse as it is star-studded, spanning the worlds of film, music, TV and sports. "Harry Potter" fans will be pleased to hear that their favorite wizards, and the actors who played them, from <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/383853/moviemain.jhtml">"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2"</a> earned the most nominations, with four total, for Favorite Movie, Favorite Book (the "Harry Potter" series), <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/264615/personmain.jhtml">Daniel Radcliffe</a> for Favorite Movie Actor and Emma Watson for Favorite Movie Actress. The surprising second-place vote-getter is "The Smurfs," which nabbed three nominations including Favorite Movie, Sofia Vergara for Favorite Movie Actress and Katy Perry for Favorite Voice in an Animated Movie. Not to worry, "Twilight" fans, your favorite franchise is nominated in two categories: Favorite Book (the "Twilight" series) and Kristen Stewart for Favorite Movie Actress. Other notable nominees include superstars in the music categories: LMFAO, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, who each received two nods and will battle it out for Favorite Group/ Female Singer and Favorite Song. Derek Jeter and Tim Tebow were nominated for Favorite Male Athlete, and Serena and Venus Williams are each up for Favorite Female Athlete. On March 1, kids will be able to cast their votes in 20 total categories across all of Nickelodeon's digital outlets, including Nick.com, the Nick Mobile app and Nickelodeon's Facebook page and Twitter feed. Nick.com fans can vote using a Facebook application that will live on the Nickelodeon Facebook page. Users will be able to vote from a tab on the page and, for the first time ever, the entire voting experience can be embedded directly into Facebook wall posts. Also new this year, fans will be able to vote for their favorite nominees on Twitter through the use of custom hashtags. The 25th Annual Kids' Choice Awards will be hosted by Will Smith and air live on Saturday, March 31, at 8 p.m.

Amanda Seyfried has been stepping outside the proverbial box recently with her roles in films. The last time we caught up with the "Mean Girls" and "Mamma Mia!" star, she was fighting the Man with Justin Timberlake in the sci-fi thriller "In Time," and this week, she has us on the edge of our seats in the suspense thriller "Gone."

The film revolves around recent kidnapping victim Jill Parrish (Seyfried), who is still trying to get over a series of harrowing, inexplicable events that occurred a year earlier, when she claimed she was kidnapped and buried in a hole in a ground. When Jill comes home from work one evening to find her sister missing, she is convinced that the same kidnapper has returned to torture her once more.

Unfortunately for Jill, the people around her think she's crazy, including the local police, and Jill has to take matters into her own hands to try to find her sister before something truly terrible happens. The story is told in such a way to keep the audience wondering if Seyfried's character is really crazy and if the one police officer who believes her is actually the killer.

When MTV News caught up with Seyfried recently, she revealed that she enjoys playing up the paranoid aspects of a femme fatale, but also explained exactly why Jill isn't your run-of-the-mill damsel in distress.

"She's just the girl-next-door kind of character, and it kind of makes you realize that anyone is capable of anything if they put their mind to it," Seyfried said. "She has no choice but to go in the direction of the serial killer, because he has her sister, and it's a no-holds-barred really strong female character."

Action heroes like Rambo may not give in to threats, but Oscar producers caved to "The Dictator."

Of course, it's all in good fun. In an interview with "Extra," producer Brian Grazer confirmed Sacha Baron Cohen will arrive at the Academy Awards on Sunday as his character from his forthcoming political satire, contrary to earlier reports.

"We're thrilled to have him and he'll be on the red carpet, I guess, dressed as the 'dictator,' " he told "Extra." Grazer, a producer on movies like "A Beautiful Mind" and "Apollo 13," is also producing this year's Oscars.

In "The Dictator," Baron Cohen adds the totalitarian leader of a fictitious country to his list of alter egos, which already included Ali G, Borat and Bruno, all of whom have headlined feature films since launching on "The Ali G Show." He played a supporting role in Best Picture nominee "Hugo" but was insistent about attending the awards show in character as Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen. Earlier on Friday (February 24), the English actor and comedian called in to the "Today" show (as Aladeen) to address his alleged ban from awards.

The "Today" interview came on the heels of a video message on the website for "The Republic of Wadiya," in which the dictator made a number of threats. "On behalf of the nation of Wadiya, I am outraged at being banned from the Oscars by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Zionists," General Aladeen said in the video. "While I applaud the Academy for taking away my right to free speech, I warn you that if you do not lift your sanctions and give me my tickets back by 12 p.m. on Sunday, you will face unimaginable consequences."

Back in 2007, Oscar producers wouldn't allow the actor to appear in character as Borat. At press time, a spokesperson for the Academy told The Hollywood Reporter she had not heard about the plans for Cohen for Sunday.

"The Dictator" arrives in theaters May 11.
